Midnight Cowboy requires reservations, and we did this one after it was highly recommended by a number of locals. Firehouse Lounge is located inside a hostel and your entry will be through a bookshelf. If you aren’t worried about the tour, you can head there anytime before 10 PM on weekdays and 8 pm on weekends. The grounds and architecture are definitely a sight to see! If you have a group, this 2-hour private boat tour leaves from the Loop 360 Boat Ramp and takes you and up to 11 friends all around Lake Austin! If you don’t need a private tour, this Austin boat tour leaves from the same spot and is great for small groups, couples, and families. While it’s a half a mile out and back from the bottom to the cliff viewpoint, there is a trail that goes a little less than a mile further out. This keeps Lake Austin free from support columns, which is great because the recreational lake is highly popular with boaters and water skiers. Something you may notice is that Pennybacker Bridge is constructed so that no part of the structure touches the water. You’ll get views of Lake Austin and the Pennybacker Bridge. The 360 Bridge Overlook is one of the best free things to do in Austin! It’s another short trail (half a mile, out and back) with a high reward. It’s beautiful (but definitely more crowded) around sunset. If you want you can even bring food and enjoy a picnic at one of the picnic table areas along the main trail. While it’s considered the highest point in Austin, you really don’t have to put too much effort into reaching the peak. ![]() ![]() Make sure to explore all of the little side trails and gaze at the gorgeous estates below! There are plenty of dog walkers, walkers, joggers and bikers making use of the trail around the lake. Kayakers and paddlers use the stretch of Barton Springs while canoes, rowboats and larger vessels take to the larger waters of the Colorado. The wild flowers around the lake in spring are nice to see as well. You'll find nice forested areas with mature trees, good birdlife, active fish that you can spot fairly easily in the lakes clear waters. There is an easy to follow 10 mile circular route called the Ann and Roy Butler Trail that encircles the lake from MoPac (west) to Pleasant Valley Road (east) as well as a handful of designated parks to enjoy along its shores. ![]() The lake is a very popular recreational spot and the many parks surrounding its shores providing important Green Lungs for the city. Today what you find is a 168 hectare body of water that is mostly shaped after the directional flow of the Colorado River as well as a section of Barton Springs, snaking its way south of downtown until you reach the dam. This reservoir was created in 1960 by damming up the Colorado River just east of I-35. ![]() The lake is named after the Former First Lady Lady Bird Johnson (1912-2007). Lady Bird Lake (formerly known as Town Lake) is located just to the south of downtown Austin. ![]()
